Artist StatementArtist Statement My interest in art, specifically drawing, was with me throughout my childhood and picked up pace during my high school years. Most of my general influences during that time were fairytales, fantasy video games, and any kind of fantastical stories. Over the last few years, I took these stories and creatures into my work with influences from Art Nouveau. Fairies, mermaids, and realms were the subjects of several series of paintings. Through the exploration of these motifs, I was led to my current series of work involving masks. The precursor to this body of work was my father’s cancer diagnosis in May of 2011. It was one simple statement that set the gears in my head turning for a completely different series of work. While my father was hospitalized, my siblings and I would sit with him in shifts.
